Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that is present in most of the cells in our body but especially in our skin.  Hyaluronic acid holds moisture as it has an infinity for water molecules.  Allergan Aesthetics™ processes hyaluronic acid into dermal fillers using either the Hylacross^™ or Vycross^® technology.  The molecules are cross-linked to produce dermal fillers that have different viscosities and that are indicated for correcting volume loss in different areas of the face.

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are an inexpensive non-invasive way to correct volume loss. They have evolved over the years to be safe, long lasting and easy to administer. Volume loss in your face makes you look tired, gaunt and older than you are. Replacing volume loss can make a big difference in how you look and feel about yourself and how others see you.  After a treatment, you will notice a smooth natural look giving you a more youthful appearance.  Your friends will be asking if you have been on vacation since you look so refreshed.

I prefer treating patients with a dermal filler selected from Allergan Aesthetics™ JUVÉDERM^® Collection of Fillers.  There are currently five JUVÉDERM^®  dermal fillers FDA approved for use in the U.S.

The injection procedure of these dermal fillers produces minimal discomfort. On areas of the face, a topical numbing cream is applied for 20-30 minutes. For lip augmentation injections, a dental infiltrate with lidocaine is performed to decrease discomfort. Once started, most dermal filler treatments take 30 minutes or less.

It is best to have a treatment plan when correcting volume loss in several areas with dermal fillers. Typically I recommend starting with the area of greatest concern and encourage patients to have treatments in stages.  Too many injections in any one session can become unbearable.   After a treatment, you will want to re-evaluate the area to consider if another layer of dermal filler needs to be added.  With a full correction in one area, you may then see another area that needs treatment for an overall natural look.
